Generation One, an early childhood education non-profit, is seeking an experienced Controller. The successful candidate will be responsible for the accounting, finance, and human resource functions. This position reports directly to the CEO, working closely with the Board of Directors.
The Controller is considered a key role, in supporting our strategic implementation initiatives and expansion goals. Based in the Third Ward, Generation One is a living laboratory for education research and development. With high-quality early education, engaging after-school programming, and family support, Generation One empowers children and families to thrive and reach their fullest potential.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Finance:
- Prepare the monthly finance dashboard and rolling cash flow forecasts, presenting critical analyses to Management and the Board
- Develop, monitor, and report key metrics via dashboards
- Manage cash flows, identifying critical needs and opportunities
- Prepare and submit monthly and quarterly Indicator Reports
- Support grant applications with the preparation of financial reports
- Maintain and submit an annual report for ECFA membership
- Administer insurance policies and maintain correspondence with the insurance broker
- Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Lead the annual budget planning process and present to Management and the Board
- Review monthly budget, financial reports, and overall financial status with Management
- Internal Controls and Systems:
- Monitor, evaluate, improve and document internal controls, policies, and procedures
- Manage the integration of QuickBooks with Salesforce and maintain donor and vendor information in Salesforce
- Ensure regulatory compliance across all accounting, finance, and resource functions
- Accounting:
- Manage all accounting functions including accounts payable, expense reporting, banking activity, and petty cash
- Oversee the month-end close process including bank and other account reconciliations
- Prepare monthly financial statements, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
- Coordinate and lead all audit and 990 processes, including directing coordination between the external audit firm and any outside accounting consultants
- Oversee preparation and timely filing of all local, state, and federal tax returns, and forms
- Human Resources:

- Oversee the Human Resource function including all aspects of payroll (processing, taxes, and employee files)
- Administer healthcare insurance, 401(K) and other benefits

Key Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting
- CPA certification is a plus
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in accounting, finance, and business administration
- Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience with demonstrated organizational leadership capabilities, preferably in a non-profit environment
- Strong technical knowledge of regulatory requirements for GAAP, tax, and financial reporting
- Strong understanding of internal controls, process improvements, and financial governance
- Solid project management, organizational, and execution skills
Salary: up to $95,000
